        The 1901 Census for the Iraghticonner Barony, Listowel Parish, Listowel Poor Law Union, in the North Kerry Parliamentary Division, County Kerry, lists a Patrick Bunce living at house # 25, no street name, Urban Listowel, Listowel Civil Parish; and a Denice Bunce living at house #4, Bridewell Lane,  Listowel, Listowel Parish.  These could be relatives left behind when Ellen Bunce immigrated to America in 1880.

BIOGRAPHY: 

        Ellen married Edmund Patrick Dillon in 1880, and they arrived in the United States the same year. 

        The Waterbury, Connecticut Directories, 1889-91, indicate that the Edward Dillons lived on Brennan Lane, Union City, Naugatuck, CT, in the years 1889 and 1890.  In 1891, in the same directory, they had moved to  Spring Street, Union City, Naugatuck, CT.  The Waterbury and Naugatuck City Directories of 1894 and 1895 list them as living on Prospect Street, and Edmund being employed by the Naugatuck Malleable Iron Company. 

        At the time of the 1900 Census, Ellen was 39 years old, and living at 82 Spring Street, Naugatuck, CT (3-WD - Series: T623; Roll: 144; Page: 217; District: 339), with her husband Edmund P. (Edmond) (43), a day laborer; her daughters: Margaret M. (18), shoemaker at the Rubber Company, Theresa E. (12), Catherine A. (5), Julia E. (2); and her sons: Patrick T. (17), a laborer at the Button Shop, David D. (15), a laborer at the Button Shop, Edmond J. (13), John J.(10), and Dennis F. (7).

Naugatuck - 1906

        Ellen's husband, Edmund Patrick Dillon, died on 7 May 1906, at his home at 24 Anderson Street, because of hemorrhaging due to pulmonary tuberculosis.  He had been treated for tuberculosis for over two years when he died, at the age of 49.

        At the time of the 1910 Census, Ellen was living at 22 Anderson Street, Naugatuck, CT (3-WD - Series: T624; Roll: 137; Page: 118; District: 371). She was listed as the head of household, aged 51, who was born in Ireland (arrived 1871) and had 10 children, 9 still living. Living with her, were her daughter, Margaret M. (28), unemployed; her son Patrick T. (27), a clerk in a meat market; her son David D. (24), a laborer at the Rubber Shop; her son Edmond J. (23), a packer at the Rubber Shop; her daughter, Ellen T. (21), a bottle maker at the Rubber Shop Ext.; her son, John J. (20), a laborer at the Rubber Shop; her son, Dennis F. (16); her daughter, Katherine A. (15); and her daughter, Julia (11). 

        The Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1913, Naugatuck, listed the Dillon family as living at 24 Anderson Street, Union City.  Ellen was listed as the widow of Edmund and the head of household.  Her employed children were listed as boarders: David D., employed by the Goodyear Metallic Rubber Shoe Company; Edmund J., employed at 45 Bridge Street, Union City; John, employed at the Goodyear India Rubber Glove Manufacturing Company; Margaret M., a nurse; and Patrick T., a clerk at 74 Curtiss Street, Union City.  The address listed for the Union City Fife and Drum Corp was 23 Anderson Street, Union City.

        The 1915 Waterbury Connecticut City Directory, Naugatuck, listed Ellen as the widow of Edmund, living at 13 Barnum Court, Naugatuck, CT.

        At the time of the 1920 Census, Ellen was living at 117 Melbourne Court, Naugatuck, CT (1-WD - Series: T625; Roll: 190; Page: 147; District: 298). She was listed as the head of household, age 61, and living with her son, Patrick, age 36, a salesman at a meat store; her son, David, age 34, a laborer in the Rubber Factory; her son Edward, age 32, a laborer in the Rubber Factory; and her daughter, Ellen, age 28, a laborer in the Rubber Factory.  117 Melbourne Court was also the address listed for the Union City Fife and Drum Corp in the Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directories of 1920, 1922, and 1924.

        At the time of the 1930 Census, Ellen was living at 117 Melbourne Court, Naugatuck, CT (1-WD - Series: T626; Roll: 274; Page: 31; District: 179). She was listed as the head of household, age 70, and living with her son, Patrick, age 46, a meat cutter in a meat market; her son, David, age 44, unemployed; her daughter Nell, age 38, a waitress at a school; her son Frank, age 36, unemployed; and her daughter, Julia, age 32, unemployed.

        In 1946, Ellen was living at 117 Melbourne Court, in Naugatuck, CT (Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Watertown, Connecticut City Directory, 1946), with her son David D. (61), who was employed as a janitor in Waterbury, CT.

DEATH: Ellen died at her home, at 117 Melbourne Court, Naugatuck CT, on 22 Feb 1948, at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 7 days. Her doctor, W. J. Reilly, had been treating her for arteriole sclerotic heart disease (for three days). 

BURIAL: Ellen was buried on 25 Feb 1948, at St. James Cemetery, in a family plot, with her husband, Edmund Patrick (d 7 May 1906) and her son, Patrick Thomas (d 9 May 1943), in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck, CT. Funeral arrangements were made by the Alderson Funeral Home, 201 Meadow Street, Naugatuck, CT.
